Microsoft Secure Score measures how many recommended security actions your organization has taken across supported Microsoft products. It helps an IT team see configuration opportunities, compare progress over time, and begin a work list. That is valuable. It is not a substitute for a person asking whether the controls fit the business, its licences, and its actual exposure.
What Secure Score helps identify
Microsoft brings recommendations for identities, applications, devices, email, and other supported services into one view. Some actions receive partial points; others can be marked as addressed through another control. A team can use the dashboard to find unreviewed recommendations and track changes. Microsoft also says recommendations are a baseline, not a complete view of every attack surface.
What a number cannot decide
A higher score is not a guarantee against a breach. The same recommendation may matter differently to a 40-person accounting firm and a software company with external collaborators. A dashboard cannot decide whether a change will interrupt a critical workflow, whether an alternative mitigation is credible, or which customer obligation should shape the first month of work.
Licensing matters too. Available settings and implementation paths depend on what the organization has purchased and deployed. An analyst should distinguish a control that is absent from one that is unavailable under the current licence, implemented in another tool, or deliberately deferred with a documented reason.
Configuration versus risk
A configuration finding is a fact about a setting. Risk depends on context: the people and data affected, how the setting is used, other controls, and the consequences of change. A useful assessment connects the two. For example, a sharing recommendation should lead to questions about who collaborates externally, which information is sensitive, and what approval and review practices already exist.
Where analyst review earns its place
A human Microsoft 365 assessment can validate selected settings against an agreed scope, investigate exceptions, and explain trade-offs in language leadership can act on. It should produce prioritized findings, not merely a screenshot of the score. NorthSecure AI's Microsoft 365 Security Assessment is read-only and configuration based; it does not read customer email, documents, or Teams chats.
When should a Canadian SMB consider one?
Consider an independent review before a wider Copilot rollout, after material changes to identity or sharing, when client or insurer questionnaires ask for evidence, or when the internal team needs an outside view of priorities. If you already use Secure Score, bring it to the discussion. It is useful evidence, but the decision is about the business, not a target number.
